Quick answer: At almost every major US airport, you can only vape outside, in marked areas before security. Vaping is treated like smoking, and at O'Hare and Midway it's banned indoors under Illinois law. A few airports have an option past security: smoking lounges at Las Vegas and Nashville (ask about vaping), covered outdoor areas at Tampa, and a smoking area at Miami where e-cigarettes are not allowed.

Checked October 2026. Airport rules change, and signs at the airport override this table. Where a lounge allows smoking, ask staff before you vape.
Chicago: O'Hare and Midway
Illinois added e-cigarettes to the Smoke Free Illinois Act in January 2024, so vaping is banned inside O'Hare and Midway terminals, just like smoking. Use the marked areas outside the terminals, which means going back through security. At O'Hare, allow extra time: re-screening at busy checkpoints can take a while.
The few airports with an option past security
- Las Vegas (LAS): enclosed, ventilated 21+ gaming lounges in the concourses permit smoking. Ask staff about vaping.
- Nashville (BNA): a paid smoking lounge in Concourse B near Gate B-10. Ask about vaping.
- Tampa (TPA): covered outdoor smoking areas in each airside, near Gates A18, C30, E62 and F88.
- Miami (MIA): a smoking area at TGI Fridays near Gate D-36, but e-cigarettes are not allowed there.
- Los Angeles (LAX): outdoor patios are reported at Tom Bradley International and Terminal 7, but the airport doesn't publish them.
Everywhere else, once you clear security, plan on no vaping until you leave your destination airport.
Why vaping is treated like smoking
Most airports and many states and cities write their smoke-free rules to include e-cigarettes. Atlanta, Denver, Orlando, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Philadelphia and Salt Lake City name vaping or e-cigarettes in their rules, and Illinois law covers vaping at O'Hare and Midway. Fines vary: Atlanta's ordinance allows fines up to $200, and Virginia's indoor air law, which covers Reagan National, allows a $25 fine.
Tips for a long travel day
- Vape before security if you have time; at most airports there's no option after.
- Keep your vape in your carry-on, never your checked bag; see our guide to flying with a vape.
- On a short connection, don't plan to leave security and come back.
- Keep your device locked in your bag so it can't fire by accident.
- Never vape in an airplane lavatory; it's banned and smoke detectors are sensitive.
